If you’re editing recipe videos you probably have a lot of different clips you’re moving around in your timeline. I’m going to share a few tips for how to move these clips around easily so you can get them exactly where you want.

How to quickly move footage around in your timeline

In the video you can see that I started editing and then there’s a big jump in the footage. There are more clips that I want to add in between stirring these mushrooms and spreading the mixture on the pan.

Track select forward tool

What I’m going to do is press A to enable the track select forward tool and I’m just going to move all this footage forward to the right.

The nice thing about the track select forward tool is that when you click on a clip it will grab all the clips that exist to the right of it and move them together.

The difference between the selection tool and the track select forward tool

If you were using the selection tool (V) it would only grab an individual clip.

Using the track select forward tool (A) helps ensure that you aren’t overwriting any clips when moving footage.

Ripple delete

If I had a space between two clips that I wanted to get rid of, I can CONTROL + CLICK and choose Ripple Delete to eliminate that space and move all clips that are to the right of that back together. This is a little easier than using the track select forward tool to grab and drag it all over.

You can also use ripple delete with whole clips if you CONTROL + CLICK on the clip and choose ripple delete. This will delete the whole clip, eliminate any space, and move all clips from the right over together.

Grabbing footage from the source monitor

Another thing I like to do is use these little icons in the source monitor to quickly drag my footage or audio over to the timeline. If you grab from the video it will bring both the video and the audio together.

Using period (.)

You can also use the period key (.) to quickly drop footage from the source monitor into the timeline. Make sure your playhead is right where you want it to be before doing this to avoid overwriting any other clips.
